A Grounding Practice Before Exploring Energy Work

From Healing From Within by Dr. Marlene Fuson, BCND — Chapter 5: Advanced Energy Techniques for Deep Healing
You do not need an elaborate routine to begin. A short, repeatable practice can create a dependable moment of self-connection.
The Ground-and-Notice Practice
Advanced energy concepts can sound complicated, but their most practical starting point is attention. Before adding devices or techniques, notice how people, places, habits, and thoughts affect your sense of steadiness.
- Place both feet on the floor and look around the room.
- Name five neutral things you can see.
- Notice your breathing without changing it, then gently lengthen the exhale.
- Ask, ‘What helps me feel safely present right now?’
Move slowly. If a step does not feel appropriate today, adapt it or leave it out. A compassionate practice should increase awareness, not create pressure.
What to Notice
Grounding protects a healing practice from becoming another form of chasing. It brings you back to breath, body, environment, and choice—the parts of the experience you can observe directly. After the exercise, notice any change in your breathing, thoughts, energy, or willingness to take the next supportive step. The goal is information, not a forced result.
Reflection for the Week
Which environments help you feel clear and settled, and which leave you depleted?
Write without editing yourself for five minutes. You are not trying to produce the “right” answer; you are creating enough quiet to hear your own honest response.
Your Next Step
Choose one action from this article and practice it for seven days. Keep it small enough to complete even on a difficult day. At the end of the week, ask what felt supportive, what felt forced, and what you want to carry forward.
