A Five-Minute Mind-Body Check-In

From Healing From Within by Dr. Marlene Fuson, BCND — Chapter 2: The Mind-Body Connection

The purpose of a healing exercise is not to perform wellness perfectly. It is to learn what helps you feel more aware, supported, and aligned.

The Three-Layer Check-In

The mind and body are not separate stories. Thoughts can influence breathing, muscle tension, sleep habits, appetite, and the way we respond to stress, while physical sensations can shape mood and attention.

  1. Name the strongest thought in your mind right now.
  2. Name the emotion that seems connected to it.
  3. Locate any related sensation in your body without trying to fix it.
  4. Take five slow breaths and choose one supportive next action.

Move slowly. If a step does not feel appropriate today, adapt it or leave it out. A compassionate practice should increase awareness, not create pressure.

What to Notice

Awareness gives you a place to begin. When you can notice a thought, an emotion, and a body sensation without judgment, you can choose a more supportive response instead of moving automatically. After the exercise, notice any change in your breathing, thoughts, energy, or willingness to take the next supportive step. The goal is information, not a forced result.

Reflection for the Week

What does your body often tell you before your mind admits that you need rest or support?

Write without editing yourself for five minutes. You are not trying to produce the “right” answer; you are creating enough quiet to hear your own honest response.

Your Next Step

Choose one action from this article and practice it for seven days. Keep it small enough to complete even on a difficult day. At the end of the week, ask what felt supportive, what felt forced, and what you want to carry forward.
