Using Visualization as a Daily Rehearsal for Change

From Healing From Within by Dr. Marlene Fuson, BCND — Chapter 11: The Role of Consciousness in Healing
When life feels full, the smallest usable practice is often the most valuable one.
The Two-Minute Rehearsal
Conscious attention influences what we notice, repeat, and reinforce. Visualization can help us rehearse a calmer conversation, a supportive routine, or a future choice before we meet the moment in real life.
- Choose one upcoming moment that matters.
- Picture the setting with realistic detail.
- See yourself breathing, speaking, and responding in alignment with your values.
- Write the first practical action that supports this vision.
Move slowly. If a step does not feel appropriate today, adapt it or leave it out. A compassionate practice should increase awareness, not create pressure.
What to Notice
Visualization works best when it supports action. It is not a substitute for practical care; it is a way to make a desired response feel more familiar and available. After the exercise, notice any change in your breathing, thoughts, energy, or willingness to take the next supportive step. The goal is information, not a forced result.
Reflection for the Week
What are you mentally rehearsing every day—fear, possibility, or a mixture of both?
Write without editing yourself for five minutes. You are not trying to produce the “right” answer; you are creating enough quiet to hear your own honest response.
Your Next Step
Choose one action from this article and practice it for seven days. Keep it small enough to complete even on a difficult day. At the end of the week, ask what felt supportive, what felt forced, and what you want to carry forward.
