Sound Therapy: Creating an Intentional Listening Practice

Healing From Within book and workbook by Dr. Marlene Fuson, BCND

Sound can mark a transition, support focused breathing, or help create a calmer environment. The sound-therapy appendix encourages readers to use listening intentionally while keeping expectations realistic and personal.

A Grounded Practice

  1. Select a comfortable sound, song, or guided audio.
  2. Lower the volume to a level that feels gentle rather than immersive.
  3. Listen for five to ten minutes while noticing breath and muscle tension.
  4. Stop or adjust if the sound feels uncomfortable or overstimulating.

Approach the practice with curiosity rather than pressure. A complementary wellness tool should support awareness and informed choice, not replace appropriate professional care or promise a guaranteed result.

Reflection for the Week

Which sounds help you return to the present, and which make it harder to settle?

Write for five minutes without editing yourself. Then choose one small, realistic action that reflects what you learned.
