A Personal Practice for Bringing Evidence and Meaning Together

From Healing From Within by Dr. Marlene Fuson, BCND — Chapter 19: The Science and Spirituality of Healing
When life feels full, the smallest usable practice is often the most valuable one.
Evidence, Experience, Meaning
Science asks how we can observe, measure, and test. Spirituality asks how we make meaning, connect, and live according to our deepest values. A whole-person approach can respect both without confusing their roles.
- Write what is objectively known about the situation.
- Write what you have personally experienced.
- Write the meaning or value you draw from it.
- Notice where these overlap and where they should remain distinct.
Move slowly. If a step does not feel appropriate today, adapt it or leave it out. A compassionate practice should increase awareness, not create pressure.
What to Notice
Discernment allows us to honor a meaningful personal experience while remaining honest about what has or has not been established scientifically. After the exercise, notice any change in your breathing, thoughts, energy, or willingness to take the next supportive step. The goal is information, not a forced result.
Reflection for the Week
How can you remain open-hearted and evidence-aware at the same time?
Write without editing yourself for five minutes. You are not trying to produce the “right” answer; you are creating enough quiet to hear your own honest response.
Your Next Step
Choose one action from this article and practice it for seven days. Keep it small enough to complete even on a difficult day. At the end of the week, ask what felt supportive, what felt forced, and what you want to carry forward.
